Dear FOS (Friends of Surfas)

Yay! We are open and are ok’d to sell our food items. Our shelves are being stocked as fast as possible and every day they are filling in. We have been VERY busy with customers so suggest that if you are wanting to purchase a particular food item please call first to be sure it is in the store AND ask for the item to be held under your name for you to pick up. We hold for 2 business days!

Our Cheese and Charcuterie Counter is OPEN but it will be another week or so before the café will be open. Come in and meet the Surfas Cheesemonger, Ian.

unnamed (1).jpg

Finding his love for cheese more than a decade ago by visiting various cheese shops in Los Angeles, Ian Robertson quickly began expanding his palate and knowledge of cheese at every opportunity. Having an immense passion for food, Ian is an accomplished self-taught chef. He first started in the food industry working/studying at a spice store when after a couple of years was given the opportunity to become a Cheesemonger. Though a relative newcomer in the cheese industry - having been working in cheese for several years, he made his impression and excelled rapidly. He was the head monger for an independent cheese shop in Orange County when he competed and placed highly at The Cheesemonger Invitational, one of the toughest challenges in cheese. From the competition, he found himself working directly for two historic California-original cheese makers, spreading awareness and love for California cheeses across Southern California.

Ian also found himself as the cheese expert for a specialty foods representative company which allowed him to become familiar with various accoutrements from olives to pasta to crackers. Ian is thrilled to show cheese for Surfas Culinary District, and would love to give you a sample of your next favorite cheese.

UPDATE on SURFAS Move

Surfas is pulling up roots and moving to a NEW store location.

As you can see we are moving out of the Culver City Surfas Culinary District location. We pulled out our beautiful coral tree because we could not bear to part with it and now it is waiting for a place to shade old customers and new ones who will enjoy it once again on our new store patio. This is NOT referring to the HBO building which is scheduled to be constructed at the corner of Washington and National Boulevards in Culver City. In the coming months, we will be opening another Surfas Culinary District location along the lines of the stores that were closed earlier this year.

We have promised to provide you updates but there have been so many questions we want to clarify what is happening. Our new store location is currently occupied by another company. We have a confidentially agreement restricting us as to giving out the address. When that structure becomes vacant we will start remodeling to create the new Surfas Culinary District. It is going to take as long as it takes. Stay tuned for updates. We will be giving out information on where and when as soon as we can.

GOOD NEWS…..In the meantime our design, commercial equipment sales and installers are working with customers everyday at our corporate offices in Culver City. They are eager to talk to you regarding your commercial equipment needs, food service projects of all sizes, competitive quotes and volume smallwares orders. Direct emails, customer service emails through our website www.surfasonline.com and phone calls to (310) 559-4770 will reach one of our specialists trained in commercial and health department projects. Surfas Restaurant Equipment and Supply is there to provide the best prices and service possible.

“It’s not about WHERE Surfas is but WHO Surfas is”

When the information was sent out that Surfas had closed both of the California store locations we received an email that contained the above line and it stopped us in our tracks. The email was from a family who lives close to the Culver City store.  Surfas has been their go to for food adventures over many years. They touched us with their dedication to continue our relationship no matter where we move the store. And, this we realized is what many have said to us in different words and in different ways but essentially the sentiment was the same. It’s not about where we are located but about what we do and who we are.

Surfas has received thousands of emails, phone calls and comments from customers all over California. These communications were from people who had thoughtful ideas, suggestions and encouragement for us to find another store location. This has been an invaluable experience. Our grateful team read and discussed all information that came our way and we got busy.  We made lists, created maps and evaluated costs. Many times we looked at each other and said, “Boy, we are so lucky to have customers like these!” Today, we happily announce:

SURFAS has a NEW LOCATION!

Work has begun getting our new home ready (we can’t wait to tell you where it is, but we need to finalize a few things first!). It will take time to make suitable improvements but we are not kicking back. This is time for some serious thinking and planning. But, an element is missing…YOU. We learned from the communications we have received that you want to have input in creating the next Surfas Culinary District. Some of you have ideas about changing Surfas and some of you have strong feelings to keep Surfas the exact same. This goes along with our history of listening to our customer needs. All thoughts and comments are welcome. We ARE listening.

If you would like to participate, please click the link to fill out the survey. We would gratefully appreciate it if you can provide manufacturer information or label descriptions. Write as much as you like and as often as you like.

We are very excited about our new store location. Unfortunately due to confidentiality agreements we are unable to give any further information on the exact location but we can say we will remain in the greater Los Angeles area.

And, yes we are working on an ecommerce website for our Surfas products.
