About Us Surfas is a wonderfully unique store. Owned and operated by the same family since 1937, we have served three generations of satisfied customers in the food service industry. Surfas has a reputation unsurpassed for excellence in design and installation of beautiful commercial kitchens. We maintain a warehouse stocked with thousands of items and are considered to be the ultimate source for fine imported and domestic food items, ingredients and cookware at discount pricing. Surfas is paradise found for serious food enthusiasts and professional chefs. This website has been created in response to requests from Surfas customers all over the globe who love to shop at our Culver City, California location.
Surfas History Surfas had its beginnings in an abandoned Los Angeles garage in 1937. It prospered, and in 1947 the business was moved to West Jefferson Boulevard, complete with a showroom and a service department for the expanding company. With a Master's Degree in Business, Les Surfas brought new ideas and techniques to the company in 1965. From its humble beginnings, the modest sized company became known as a premier commercial kitchen design and installation house, but that was only part of the success. Surfas had also expanded into a warehouse filled with commercial equipment, cookware, cutlery, tools, china, glass ware, bake ware and other professional culinary items. When they outgrew their space in 1989, Surfas moved to a new Culver City location and added gourmet and specialty food to their warehouse. Surfas became known as a Chef's Paradise to the local professionals who spend hours at this friendly store, shopping and sharing ideas about fine food and industry trends. A few years ago, they opened their doors to the general public. Enthusiastically received by chefs and food lovers, Surfas is being discovered by new customers every day. Their current inventory consists of over 14,000 items and includes an impressive selection of fine imported and domestic foods and ingredients as well as an extensive selection of commercial quality kitchen necessities. Les’ son, Steven Surfas, joined Surfas full-time in 2004 after graduating from Loyola Marymount University with a degree in business administration with emphasis in Finance and International Business. Working with his father, Steven is helping to implement an expansion of the small sized company to a recognizable image throughout the nation. New ideas and new technology are a strong interest of Steven’s who is presently attending Pepperdine University MBA program part-time while working in his capacity with Surfas. The business is a passion he has shared with his father since childhood and with the focus and dedication he brings to the company the future of Surfas looks very bright. The design and installation of a commercial kitchen is a specialty of the food service industry. For over 60 years, Surfas has been a premiere source for architects, chefs, food and beverage professionals, small restaurateurs and large chain restaurant operators.
